11 facts about your pension fund

What does SSPF stand for?

1
The contribution that you pay each month as a participant of SSPF for your financial future is exceptionally low. Exceptionally low, namely 2 percent of your gross salary. The other 31 percent is paid by your employer.

2
The SSPF pension scheme has a sponsor guarantee. Should the pension fund run into difficulties, Shell will guarantee financial support. This arrangement provides extra security for you as a participant which is highly unusual in the Dutch pension landscape.

3
Since July 2013, SSPF is a closed fund and no new participants are joining. Everyone who started working for Shell after 1 July 2013 is now part of the new fund. As a result the number of active participants is steadily decreasing and the number of former Shell employees and pensioners is increasing. The ratio is now as follows: 6,500 active participants, 7,100 former Shell employees and 18,800 pensioners.

4
Do you have a pension question that cannot easily be answered by e-mail or telephone? Then you can video call one of our pension specialists. During the call it is possible to share your screen and make calculations together. Video calling is rated with an average of 9 and has gained momentum for all groups of participants due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

5

SSPF has an average pay scheme. This means that the pension ultimately to be paid out is an average of your salary during your Shell employment. This will change under the new pension system. The pension agreement is based on a defined contribution scheme, in which the amount of your pension is determined both by the contributions paid in and the returns which have been achieved. This scheme must be in place by 1January 2027 at the very latest. Shell and the Central Works Council are currently discussing how the new scheme should be structured.

6
SSPF invests a total of 31 billion euros. This amount is spread over various categories, such as shares, fixed income securities, real estate and others. By spreading the assets, the long-term risks are reduced and fluctuations can be absorbed.

7
Socially responsible investment is high on your pension fund's agenda. In order to encourage the companies we invest in to adopt a sustainable policy, we actively engage with them and make our voices heard at shareholders' meetings. Only when a company is truly unwilling to follow a responsible course, we may decide to exclude them.

8
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations are the starting point of our investment policy. The focus is on four goals: Affordable and Clean Energy, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action and Gender Equality. A participant survey held among our participants shows that the 'Affordable and Clean Energy' goal is a favourite among Shell employees.

9
SSPF participants reach a higher age than the average Dutch person. For example, there are more than 30 pensioners above the age of 100. This means that some people will receive a pension for a longer period of time than they have worked for Shell.

SSPF is committed to diversity. In everyday life this means that we have created an environment where everyone feels comfortable - regardless of their age, gender or background - and can therefore show their full potential. At the end of the day, this also results in better discussions on the board.

About Oscar van Iersel

Since January 2020, Oscar van Iersel (37) has been on the board of SSPF. Together with the 7 other board members, he is committed to a healthy Shell pension. "The board is a very pleasant team to work with. One board member is in the middle of his or her career, while the other one is already retired. This mix makes for an incredibly fun dynamic. In the short time that I have been on the board, I have learned so much. For example, about our complex investment portfolio, something I don't have to deal with in my day-to-day job as Shell's HR Manager. I couldn't have imagined beforehand that this role would give me so much energy and broaden my horizons!"
