Bert van den Berg, is the linking pin within SSPF from asset manager Shell Asset Management Company B.V. (SAMCo). Lives in Baarn.
"After studying economics, I started a traineeship at ABN AMBRO in the mid-nineties. In my last position there I worked in a 'fixed income' department and I really loved it! I find investments and bonds incredibly interesting and I have always remained in this specialised field."
"In 2007, I started working at Shell Asset Management Company B.V. (SAMCo) in the Asset Management department. Among other things, we manage the assets of SSPF, invest part of them in various bonds (safe to risky) and generate a return on those. We also advise the board about the investment policy. Within SAMCo I am the linking pin for SSPF. I explain what is going on, report on the result of the portfolio and indicate changes we have made additionally. I also manage seventeen people in my department."
"It feels good to be able to make a difference in making our portfolio more sustainable"
"Together with my team, I work for pensioners on a daily basis. I feel a great responsibility to ensure that their future income is well taken care of. We are getting older, so when you retire at 65, we are responsible for about 20 years of income. At the kitchen table, I sometimes explain to my children what I do. I say: 'Daddy lends out the money in the piggy bank, and after a while we get it back - with a little more.’ Then they always have a bit of a disappointed look on their faces, because it's not really something you can see. They then tell me 'But Dad, you work at Shell, don't you?' They think it's a real shame that I'm not the boss of a petrol station."
"What I like about this job is that everything you see happening in the world every day also comes together in what happens on the financial markets. On top of that, it feels good to be able to contribute to the sustainability of our portfolio, so that together we can do our bit for a better world. SSPF has its affairs well in hand: it is a healthy pension fund with a relatively good coverage ratio and a socially responsible investment policy. That makes it a very rewarding working relationship for me!"
